About the Circle
An independent reading community for European, Asian and African literature. Free to join, run by its members, with one book and one conversation each month.
The European Literary Circle began as a handful of readers swapping novels in translation and grew into a community spread across three continents. We choose one book a month, read it slowly, and meet to talk about it — usually online, occasionally in a room with chairs and bad coffee.
We have no advertising, no paywall and no reading quota. Members propose titles, write the reviews, and host the salons. Authors and publishers are welcome to send us work through the submission form.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does membership cost anything?
No. Membership is free and always has been. Some in-person salons ask for a small contribution towards the room.
Do I have to finish the book?
Never. Plenty of members arrive halfway through and still have the best question of the evening.
Where do the events take place?
Most salons are online so members across Europe, Asia and Africa can join. A few each year are held in person.
Can I suggest a book?
Yes. Members propose titles year-round, and authors and publishers can use the Submit a Book form.
What languages do you read in?
We read in English, including translations, and often discuss the original alongside it.
How do I leave?
Use the unsubscribe link in any newsletter, or email hello@theeuropeanliterarycircle.org and we will remove you the same week.
